2020.09.28 08:02 josephtrautner SEO Strategy Fundamentals for Beginners

So you've just acquired a spanking new domain name always try for the domain name that catches your Audience's attention. You research a lot of top keywords and keyword phrases and decide that you are going to position yourself as a brand. Your research shows that it is a hot topic and online searchers are searching for your product or service.
OK, so you position yourself as a brand online. Next, you produce a few hundred or thousand of quality content posts that you slick it up with beautiful graphics and/or layout that grabs their attention. You start blogging and PR'ing ( rewriting your own articles over and over )to draw in some attention.
You drop a few links on the site or distribute a couple of your own. Finally, you arm yourself with a couple of well-written articles that you post over at article directories and ezines with a link that clips right into your business site.
You wait... and wait... and wait.
Longterm SEO strategy
Now you find yourself being mentioned in the search engines...not too much but you are getting the tastes coming down your sleeve. It's time to boost your SEO strategy. Remember the dog that had the retrieve and stood tall beside you when are you retrieving? Well, when you have your website online you need to have "the first element reading" as your foundation.
What does "on-site optimization" mean?
Put simply, on-site optimization is what you do to your own website to make it pleasing to the search engines. The way search engines view your website is through their search spiders ( also known as crawlers or robots as people call them) that list and report back any interesting items they come across on your website. Now I am not talking about common sense keyword optimization or common web design issues, I am talking about some additional things that collectively result in a better overall search engine view of your website when being optimized for search.
You will find many "onsite" items on a well-designed website that enhance search engine visibility and ranking of your website when being optimized for search. Here are just a few to get you started:
  1. Research what your target keywords and phrases are. Remember it is better to have a website designed for your visitors than a website designed for the search engines, no matter how smart your visitors may seem to be. There are several programs to help you learn about the most popular keywords being used by visitors today, and you can be list in these programs and identify the keywords that will help your business and website recognition.
  2. Having the knowledge of the keywords and phrases being used by your visitors today, you will need to refresh and organize your website to get your website up to date and into the database of search engines. Search engines have what are called "spiders", or computer programs that crawl your website to see what is there. The spiders take a snapshot of your website at any given time. This includes the titles of your pages, any titles or headers on your pages, and anything else that is visible. It even includes the navigation menu on your website. This all has to be analyzed and set up properly, or it will not do you any good.
  3. Now that you have identified what your search engine optimization strategy is going to be, you will need to identify if you are going to use "White Hat" or "Black Hat" SEO. White Hat SEO is the practice of creating content for your visitors, which is friendly to search engines. By unfavorable practices, you could find your website blacklisted by search engines. Again, any unfavorable practices will result in your website being cut off from search engines.
Black Hat SEO is the opposite of White Hat. The spiders and bots are constantly looking for ways to beat the system, and some people choose to overdo it. The result is that your website could be banned from search engines entirely. If you decide to take this route, be sure you are taking the correct steps to drive traffic to your website.
  1. Depending on the scope of your website and the products or services you are providing, you may need to use the services provided by an SEO company. If your website is a small business, you will probably be able to handle all of your SEO needs on your own with the help of the professionals. However, if you are a large business with many departments that require a lot of publicity, time, and effort to keep up with the latest standards and to keep ahead of your competition, you may want to seriously consider hiring an SEO specialist.

2020.06.08 21:30 Giuelith Your Home Business Can Succeed By Avoiding The “Later Syndrome"?

Did you know that your home business can grow by several fold without the later syndome? Many home business people are discouraged from trying to learn new knowledge or skills that will take their businesses to a new level. They already feel that their lives are too busy and they don't see how it is possible to fit more commitments into their already jammed schedules. This article shows you how to avoid this and focus on growing your home business
It usually sickens me when I see people fail in their home business just because of one problem.
Many home business people are discouraged from trying to learn new knowledge or skills that will take their businesses to a new level because of time issues. They already feel that their lives are too busy and they don't see how it is possible to fit more commitments into their already jammed schedules. Other home business entrepreneurs take an overly laid-back approach to business adventure. They sign themselves up for marketing forums and affiliate programs and then don't take those forums and programs seriously. At the end of the month or year they wonder why their business, income and lives has not improved!
This is as a result of the problem of the “later “syndrome. (Never do today what you can put off for tomorrow. Better yet, never put off 'til tomorrow what you can avoid altogether! ) The later syndrome is a very big hindrance to many home businesses. Does your home business also suffer from this syndrome? What is the later syndrome anyway? This is where by a home business owner puts off what he/she should have done today, for a later time. Simply put, the “later” syndrome is “procrastination”. Other people prefer to call it the “tomorrow syndrome” Procrastination can manifest itself in ways as simple as taking too long to write an ezine ad, putting off article submission or letting slide the date when you promised yourself you'd start an advertising campaign. The later syndrome in our home businesses is something we can be aware of and deal with over time. Procrastination is so lethal to your home business. You should avoid it. The future of your home business depends on you, just the same as with an athlete, an actor or anyone else who depends on peak personal performance to make a living. That's why everyone who wants to be successful in their home businesses has to take steps to deal with the ” later syndrome” if and when it appears. How do you deal with the “later” syndrome?
Try to ensure that you be disciplined. If you have scheduled a task to be done today, do it. Do not put it off for a later date or time. In other words, improve your time management skills.
Just remember that success in home business is a result of simple disciplines performed every day. Such simple disciplines include sticking to your work shedule no matter what. For example, if you are supposed to write an article for submission today, write it. Do not give room to any excuses that may tempt you to write it later.
Failure in any home business is a result of cumulative errors in judgment and decision repeated every day. Such simple errors include procrastination (Also known as the “later” syndrome.
Another technique is to create an environment where you can fully concentrate on your work. Not all people can concentrate in a noisy and chaotic environment. So have a well designated home business office with a conducive environment favorable for concentration.
So, if you think you need success in your home business, you should steer away from the “later” syndrome. In summary, you can fight the later syndrome in your home business by following these points. · Make a list of what needs to get done. This can be listed in no particular order and will give you a handle on just what you need to accomplish. · Prioritise these. My way of doing this is by deadlines. I arrange them in order of when they are due. You may also choose to rank them by how important it is to get them done. For example, writing an article and submitting it to article directories on time may be more important to your home business than replying to your friends email. Do that first. · Get yourself a calendar with room to write notes in. I personally use a bound notebook and write in dates as I go. I make pages with dates for long-term planning and also keep a separate list that I transfer my short-term goals to. · Take what's at the top of your priority list and determine how long it will take to accomplish it. If it's a quick task, put that down to be done the current day. If it will take a longer time, divide it into smaller tasks to be spread out over several days. Write this in your calendar with specific dates for accomplishing each. Include your deadline for completion of this task on your calendar as well. · Keep filling your calendar until you have a time set aside to do each item while still meeting your deadlines. Be careful to not overbook yourself and allow plenty of time for delays. This will allow you to feel confident that you can accomplish all you need to in the time you have. Now you can relax and work on one item at a time without feeling you have to do it all at once. https://saleresorts.com/articles/article/57/4/Travel-MLM-Opportunity-to-See-the-World

2019.10.13 21:27 crazypilot38 How to Make Money with Affiliate Marketing

What Is Affiliate Marketing
Let’s begin with the broad definition of affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is one of the oldest marketing practice which gains affiliates a commission in the case of sale based on the affiliate’s recommendation. It is one of the cheapest and easiest ways of marketing as you don’t need to create and sell a product. Just one thing you need to do is to enable a linked connection between buyer and seller and take your commission when the sale is made.

Many online companies that sell shoes or domain services offer an affiliate program. By signing up for the program, get your unique tracking link and use this link whenever you write about their product. There are different affiliate programs that use different payment terms.
Pay Per Click (PPC): You make money online based on the number of visitors redirected by your affiliate site to the advertiser’s website.
Pay Per Sale (PPS): You make money online when the purchase is completed. The advertiser pays you a percentage of the sale.
Pay Per Lead (PPL): You make money online when the visitor provides his/her contact info on the advertiser website.

How To Make Money In Affiliate Marketing
As you see, affiliate marketing is a passive income source. It is highly competitive it is true but still it may be so easy to make money online with affiliate marketing. To be successful, you need to learn what works and what doesn’t while promoting your products. If you ask yourself “How can I do affiliate marketing”, here are the tips:

Be Patient
There are many affiliate marketing works. So, you need to be patient. You can feed your website with qualified content to get high ranking positions and raise awareness, attend affiliate marketing events, seminars or webinars and join a discussion forum or online communities to meet new people. All make a great contribution to develop you. Naturally after these contributions you will be more passionate to make money from affiliate programs. If you are patient enough you will make money with affiliate programs.

Choose More Attractive Products
It would be a definite mistake to promote everything by registering with different affiliate programs. You can’t focus on each of them deeply and the result would be a disappointment. Instead of promoting everything, just promote a few products which are unique, profitable or can reach large masses. So, you need to understand market needs and desires and place your products accordingly to make money as an affiliate.

Use Several Traffic Sources
The chance of making money online raises together with the more traffic you send to the sales page. It is not wrong to run ads on just own site, but it has some missing points. The best example belongs to Google Adwords. By making an ad in your Adwords account, your sales page gets targeted traffic from various channels.

Attract Targeted Traffic
The core function of making money is to push people to click your affiliates’ links. So, you need to attract visitors. There are four ways; paid advertising, free advertising, article marketing and email marketing.

You need to combine ad copy, graphics, and a link effectively on paid services like Google AdSense in paid advertising while placing links and advertisements on free websites like Craigslist or US Free Ads in the free advertisement method. Payment methods of both of them are PPC, that is earning money regardless of whether a reader buys the product or not.

For article marketing, you need to have a higher ranking in search engine results to be a credible source. There are many article submission websites like Ezine Articles. As a marketer, you submit your article and affiliate marketers republish your article. The marketer who published the original article gradually earns higher search engine rankings. For email marketing, affiliate marketers embed an email subscription option for website visitors.

Test, Measure, and Track
Testing any action and measuring the performance help you exploring what works and what doesn’t. According to tracking results, change or keep your actions. For example, your banner ads aren’t gain you much. So, try to be placed them in different areas and compare and contrast all results. Sure, some places earn you more.

Research Product Demand
If you remember, I said “understand market needs” at the beginning. Let’s deep into this step. If you have decent traffic, view your daily, weekly, quarterly and yearly traffic and sales chart in order to explore customers’ behaviors and choices. If not, spend a time to find out how the product you are thinking to promote meets users’ needs.

Follow New Methods and Techniques
Everybody is typing to Google: How to make money affiliate marketing. Everyone wants to make money with affiliate programs. Digital marketing trends are very dynamic. So affiliate marketing is. Try to be updated with the latest techniques and methods to be successful in a competitive environment. Getting out of date results in falling behind while staying up to date results in utilizing new techniques.

Select The Right Advertiser
The quality and service of your website are as important as the advertiser’s website. If your visitors become unhappy and dissatisfied after purchasing the product you advice, they think nothing of taking your advice, again. I mean it hurts your credibility. So, focus on choosing the ones that offer good customer service while promoting the person or company.

Use Tools
You need to make your campaign efficient. There are many helpful tools that let you conduct market research, competitor research, track and convert your ad campaigns.

In order to get inspired by topics, you can use BuzzSumo and Feedly. For social media planning and tracking, Buffer would the best choice while Bitly and ClickMeter are good for link creation and tracking. In order to beautify your website with images and GIFs, you can try Unsplash and GIFMaker. For monetization, you can use Google Adsense, VigLink, and Flippa.
One of them I suggest is GO Trace by App Samurai, a smart affiliate link testing and monitoring tool, which you can use for free to test. You can test your affiliate links whether there is any broken one or not. It is useful for both advertisers and affiliates.

Affiliate Marketing Types
Most common affiliate marketing type is doing it by a website. However, with the increased amount of smartphone usage, we think it may be useful to talk about another type of affiliate marketing:

Mobile Affiliate Marketing

Mobile affiliate marketing is simple you will do mobile affiliate marketing by promoting affiliate links provided by the product owner (advertiser), which you share in your mobile app. All you have to keep in mind for mobile affiliate marketing is that your mobile advertising inventory must be a user-friendly mobile interface, it should have new functions and tools for comfortable navigation from any mobile device, be familiar with constant updates and upgrades and so on. If you apply these to your mobile product, you can easily do mobile affiliate marketing.

Final Thoughts
These are steps you should take to make money online with affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is really attractive as it offers to make money from home. Just create a website, feed it with remarkable content, attract users and join affiliate programs. While saying it seems easy, but you should be patient until you reach the point of arrival. Work, work and work by dreaming the days when you start earning money from home and make money as an affiliate. I hope this article is helpful to answer how can I do affiliate marketing question.
Here you can fin some free books and also a free video that might help.

2019.07.30 01:52 yanminis My French Amazon Affiliate/Ads Journey - Month 1

Hey guys, Yan from France here. :) I’ve stumbled on this reddit about a month ago. I’ve read most of the amazing case studies which have inspired me to start my own case study. I’m going to document the steps undertaken and hope this will help you guys out.
Please don’t hesitate to share any missteps and your thoughts on things I did wrong! I’m still learning and I don’t bite! ;)

A bit about me

Now I’m starting from scratch and bootstrapping everything as I go, after 2 years. I’m trying to build a stable side business that will last me many years as a source of “passive” income.
I’ll be writing all of the articles, till the beginning of my internship at least in 3 months.

Niche Selection:

I’m tackling a large niche like Pets or Science or Real Estate. I want to focus on only 1 niche/site for at least 2 years and build it out. I don’t want to be constrained by the limits of a very small niche. I’m making sub-niches as categories using a silo structure.

Site build:

I’m trying to spend the least amount of money at the beginning. I’ve got a $50 credit on digital ocean which I’m using and the cost of the domain is €1,20 for the first year. I’ve bought the theme for €55,66 ($60).
I spent a lot of time on speeding the site up. Had to learn all this because I’m a newbie on the technical stuffs.
Got a 90 for mobile and 99 for desktop for my homepage on Google Page Speed.
I could have gotten 100 by messing with the .htaccess for expiring headers but I broke my site before when I changed things. I could not access the site through Putty or digital ocean because I lost my private key and it was a fucking nightmare getting the site back online.
Gtmetrix for the homepage:
I’m trying to get it under 2 seconds without modifying the .htaccess file. You guys know of any way to do this? I’ve also installed the least amount of plugins:

Keyword Research:

My keyword research is pretty basic.I’m using a tool called scrapebox to scrape article titles from the english sites in my niche using the “site://” operator on google.
I’ll then upload the list of keywords in french on google adwords to check traffic. I’ll transfer the keywords gaining traffic onto a spreadsheet: Traffic Keywords.
I’ll then plug each keyword in google and study my competition using the MozBar extension on chrome. I try not to look at the metrics too much. I don’t even know what DA and PA means. I used to work with pagerank (PR).
If I see I can do better than the #1 article on google by adding more value (using humblesalesman definition), I’ll add the keyword on a masterlist.
EXAMPLE: Niche: DOGS
I type dogs in google.com using advanced search targeting “English Language” and Country: America.
On the first page I get this as a result: www.vetstreet.com/dogs
I plug this site in scrapebox using this search operator: “site://http://www.vetstreet.com/dogs/”. You can do the same in google but it is easier to export keyword lists using scrapebox. I'll get a list of pages on the site.
Like “aussiedoodle dog breed information”, “peekaboo dog breed information”, etc, etc I’ll check the traffic for all the keywords by pasting the french versions in google adwords.
Like “Informations sur la race de chien dogue” for “Mastiff dog breed information”.
If the keywords are getting any searches, then I’ll copy them into a “Traffic Keyword List”.
I’ll then check competition for each keyword and start building a master list of keywords with low competition.
I have around 900 keywords in my master list. I’m continually scraping and adding new ones every few days.

Article Writing:

I’m not a gifted writer.
It took me 1 week to write my first article and 3 days to write the second one. I had to create a template for the articles. I wrote a “best of” article for the first one using the “wirecutter article structure”. I’ve created comparison tables, pros/cons, product showcase, etc.
The second one was an info article and had a more traditional structure.
I’m using google suggestions as

for my articles.
Both articles can be monetized with amazon affiliate links though.
I’m waiting to rank before adding more affiliate links to the articles.
I’m still looking for a good plugin to do a product showcase like the one on wirecutter.
I don’t want to buy any more plugins like the AAWP plugin.
I’m using gutenberg block for the comparison table.
I’m writing my articles on google drive and spell checking them using Office 2010.
I’m using copyscape to check for plagiarism.
Photos are from flickr with copyright for commercial use, unsplash and pexels. And some from the product’s site.
I write the article, then send the google drive link to my gf to proofread. She makes suggestions and amends. I let the article lie for around 2 days and come back to it with fresh eyes. I proofread, make the necessary edits, search for pictures, copy paste everything into wordpress and publish the article.
I have published 2 articles till date. The first article went live the 20th and the second one the 28th. I have 4 articles waiting to get published.
Though I try not to use word count as a metric because I tend to write fluffs when I focus on word count, here are the word counts for my 2 articles: 10,821
All my articles tend to average around 5,000 words. I try to write 3000-5000 words per day.

Monetization Method:

Amazon affiliate for the moment.I’ll add adsense when I start to receive some traffic like ~100/day.
I’ve also started joining some french affiliation websites.
I’ll be contacting companies when my site starts to get major traffic to promote their products on it.
I’ll may be try to create some info products or dropship directly from my site. I hate doing customer service though. I’ll see when I get there.

Traffic: 0

Analytic installed but I’m not bothering checking out traffic to my site at the moment because I’m almost sure it is 0 with only 2 published articles on the site.

Backlinks: 0

I’m a total noob at link building. I used scrapebox and other black hat tools for most of my link building in the past. But I want to go legit “white hat” this time.
I’m focusing all my efforts and free time on writing articles for the moment. I have around 90 days before the start of my internship. I’ll then slow down to around 1 article per week and start b̶a̶c̶k̶l̶i̶n̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ (begging for links) like crazy.

Social Media: 0

Created a page on fb but that is all for the moment. I’m waiting to finish 200 articles first before tackling social media.

Productivity

I’m using a simple whiteboard to write all stuffs needed to be done on the site.
I’m using trello to keep track of all my articles with 5 columns: Article Ideas / Writing in Progress / Editing in Progress / Images / Published.
I’m using Pomodoro to keep tracks on time spent writing. I average around 10 pomodoros per day. I’m trying to get this up. Very difficult to do when it is so hot in France right now. Just experienced an intense heat wave last week.

Month 1 June 2019 Summary:

Goal for Month 2: 50 published articles in total

Thank you for taking the time to read! Cheers! :)

Tonight’s kind of a catalyst for this post. I just received another message, and it’s worse than any of the others.
My girlfriend died on the 7th of August, 2012. She was involved in a three car collision driving home from work when someone ran a red light. She passed away within minutes on the scene.
We had been dating for five years at that point. She wasn’t big on the idea of marriage (it felt archaic, she said, gave her a weird vibe), but if she had been, I would have married her within three months of our relationship. She was vibrant; the kind of girl that would choose dare every time. She was happiest when camping, but a total technophile too. She always smelled like cinnamon.
That being said, she wasn’t perfect. She always said something along the lines of, “If I kark it first, don’t just say good things about me. I’ve never liked that. If you don’t pay me out, you’re doing me a disservice. I’ve got so many flaws, and that’s just part of me.” So, this is for Em: the music she said she liked and the music she actually liked were very different. Her idea of affection was a side-hug. She had really long toes, like a chimpanzee.
I know that’s tangential, but I don’t feel right discussing her without you having an idea of what she was like.
Onto the meat. Em had been dead for approaching thirteen months when she first messaged me.
────────
September 4, 2013. This is when it began. I had left Emily’s Facebook account activated so I could send her the occasional message, post on her wall, go through her albums. It felt too final (and too un-Emily) to memorialise it. I ‘share’ access with her mother (Susan) - meaning, her mother has her login and password and has spent a total of approximately three minutes on the website (or on a computer, total). After a little confusion, I assumed it was her.
────────
November 16th, 2013. I had received confirmation from Susan that she hadn’t logged in to Em’s Facebook since the week of her death. Em knew a lot of people, so I instantly assumed this was one of her more tech savvy ‘friends’ fucking with me in the worst possible way.
I noticed pretty much immediately that whoever was chatting with me was recycling old messages from Em and my’s shared chat history.
The ‘the wheels on the bus' comment was from when we were discussing songs to play on a road trip that never eventuated. ‘hello’ happened a million times.
────────
Around February 2014, Emily started tagging herself in my photos. I would get notifications for them, but the tag would generally always be removed by the time I got to it. The first time I actually caught one, it felt like someone had punched me in the gut. ‘She’ would tag herself in spaces where it was plausible for her to be, or where she would usually hang out. I’ve got screenshots of two (from April and June; these are the only ones I’ve caught, so they’re a little out of the timeline I’m trying to write out):
http://i.imgur.com/X9G5agJ.png
http://i.imgur.com/55FwXKt.png
Around this period of time, I stopped being able to sleep. I was too angry to sleep.
She would tag herself in random photos every couple of weeks. The friends who noticed and said something thought it was a fucked up bug; I found out recently that there have been friends who have noticed and didn’t say anything. Some of them have removed me from their Facebook friends list.
At this point, some of you may be wondering why I didn’t just kill my Facebook profile. I wish I had. I did for a little while. On days when I can’t get out there, though, it’s nice having my friends available to chat. It’s nice visiting Em’s page when the little green circle isn’t next to her name. I was already socially reclusive when Em was alive; her death turned me into something pretty close to a hermit, and Facebook and MMOs were (are) my only real social outlets.
────────
On March 15th, I sent what I assumed was Em's hacker a message.
────────
On March 25th, I received an ‘answer’.
It wasn’t until I was going over these logs a few months later that I noticed she was recycling my own words as well.
My response seems kind of lacklustre here. I was intentionally providing him/her with emotional ‘bait’ (‘This is actually devastating’) to keep them interested in their game; I was working off the assumption that the kind of person to do this would be the kind of person that would thrive on the distress of others. I was posting in tech forums, looking for ways to track this person, contacting Facebook. I needed to keep them around so I could gather ‘evidence’.
Before anyone asks, yes, I had changed the password and all security info countless times.
────────
16th of April. I receive this.
This seems like word salad. Like all our conversations so far, it’s recycled from previous messages she’s sent.
────────
29th of April.
I hadn’t discovered any leads. Facebook had told me the locations her page had been accessed from, but since her death, they’re all places I can account for (my home, my work, her mum’s house, etc). My response here wasn’t bait. ‘yo ask Nathan’ was an in-joke too lame worth explaining, but seeing ‘her’ say it again just absolutely fucking crippled me. My reaction in real life was much less prettier. I’m not expecting my bond back.
Her last few messages had started to scare me, but I wouldn’t admit it at this point.
────────
8th of May. I don’t really have the words for this.
‘FRE EZIN G’ is the first original word she’s (?) made. This has given me nightmares that have only started to kick in recently. I keep dreaming that she’s in an ice cold car, frozen blue and grey, and I’m standing outside in the warmth screaming at her to open the door. She doesn’t even realise I’m there. Sometimes her legs are outside with me.
────────
24th of May.
I wasn’t actually drunk. She wasn’t an affectionate girl, and it always embarrassed her to exchange ‘I love you’s, cuddle, talk about how much we meant to each other. She was more comfortable with it when I was boozed up. I got fake-drunk a lot.
Her reply is what prompted me to finally memorialise her page, thinking it might help curb this behaviour. It might seem innocuous compared to her previous message - it’s pasted from an old conversation where I was trying to convince her to let me drive her home from a friend’s.
In the collision, the dashboard had crushed her. She was severed in a diagonal line from her right hip to midway down her left thigh. One of her legs was found tucked under the backseat.
────────
Going back in time. 7th of August, 2012.
These are logs from the day she died. She was usually home from work by 4.30. This, alongside a couple of voicemail messages, is the last time I talked to her under the assumption that she was alive. You’ll see why I’m showing you these soon.
────────
Yesterday. 1st of July, 2014.
I memorialised her page a couple of days after I received the message about walking. Until today, she’d been quiet; she wasn’t even tagging herself in my photos.
I don’t know what to do anymore. Do I kill her memorial page? What if it is her? I want to puke. I don’t know what’s happening.
I just heard a Facebook alert. I'm too afraid to swap windows and check it.

2018.03.12 06:20 ordochaplain Akhenaten - the MINOAN connection?

The beginning of David Gibbins’ novel “Pyramid” is a fictional exchange between Akhenaten and Mina – Mistress of the Shores, a distant relative of Akhenaten’s through his MINOAN great-great-grandmother Ahhotep (styled the “…first Mistress of the Shores…”), married to Pharaoh Ahmose and founding the royal line begetting Akhenaten – and Tutankhamun as well (if I’ve got that right…); I’ve familiarized myself with the various Google and Wikipedia articles concerning Ahhotep and Ahmose, are there any non-mainstream (you know what I mean…) finds/ facts/theories/ histories/etc… that might support this? There are the records of King Ahmose as the expeller of the Hyksos, who rebuilt sacked Avaris - supposedly using Minoan craftsmen, and the unexplained title held by the King's Mother Ahhotep: 'Mistress of the Shores of Hau-nebut' [Adam Kenawee, 28/03/11 in Ezine @rticles]. Is there confirmation of what Dynasty and Date/Century this is occurring in? Additionally – I’m not a crank, really, but I have to ask!– I have come across the “Minoan” link before, in relation to the U.E.Q.K.A. (Unsubstantiated Egyptian Queen Known As ~) Nitocris…is there any new/ updated information pertaining to this name/ person/ myth/ whatever?

2016.01.23 17:53 Perdin Vancouver - Saturday's Question - ”Who are your other aliases? What do you use them for? Any meaning behind the name?”

Hello /vancouver,
I’m going on a bowling date today. Everyone’s favourite part of bowling is being able to come up with your own nickname on bowling score calculator. I have to admit, I think WAY too hard on aliases. I spend more time on character creation/naming my MMORPG characters than actually doing quest, characters in my writings always have names with meaning behind them, and coming up with a cool team names for social sports/trivia teams are something I take a long time to come up with. I ask you reddit, ”Who are your other aliases? What do you use them for? Any meaning behind the name?”
Note: I was going to ask what the story is behind your reddit name, but I believed ilovesweatervests2 has asked this back on his original run as the inquisitor. If you don’t use any other alias for whatever reason, feel free to say why you choose your reddit name!
WobblyPrisonFish or WobblyFish is my gaming tag when it comes to online games. From Hearthstone, FFXIV, Xbox Live, or PSN Network that is what I use. First it was WobblyPrisonFish a name I created for testing something at work, since I didn’t sign out or create a new profile I stuck with that name. I got it from an online name generator for your prison name. I changed it to WobblyFish last year because the prison part made no sense. Funny, my Brother’s username is ThirstyFish in games. We just noticed this when we started playing FFXIV together.
Perdin was a name I created back when I started playing Dungeon and Dragons. It was originally for my Halfing Rogue character who ended up being my favourite character I ever played.
AtrociousWritings is a pen name I had when I actually submitted my horribly gothy poetry to ezines back in the day. Yeah, I’m done with that phase of my life.
Vancouver, ”Who are your other aliases? What do you use them for? Any meaning behind the name?”

2015.08.12 05:51 questionizzling Tax Question from Independent Contractor working for a US based company

I've been researching tax information to help me understand how much I need to have set aside for taxes next year. I'll lay out what I know, and what I don't know. Hopefully it will be useful to someone in the future. If anyone can help me fill in the blanks, or correct me where I'm wrong, it will be much appreciated.

Background

I work full time, remotely from my home office, on a contract basis for a company in the US. My income for the year has just exceed $30k (adjusted to CAD by the exchange rate at time of payment).

Income tax:

Known: I don't have to pay it in the US
Known: I do have to pay it in Canada (Source)

HST:

Known: I have to pay it over $30k of income (Source)
What if you reach the threshold and you aren't collecting GST / HST? You have 29 days from the time that your revenues reached $30,000 to register with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) so that you can charge GST. When you register you will have a registration effective date. This date establishes: - when you become eligible for any credits - when you are liable to collect GST / HST.
Unknown: how does that affect my income tax? ie. Is there any income tax benefit to suddenly having to pay this new tax?
Unknown: how to inform my employer that they need to give me a 12% raise.

CPP:

Known: I have to pay it
Unknown: How much will I have to pay? Will I have to pay the "employer portion too"? (source)
This calculator gave me some pretty concrete number to work with, but didn't really explain the calculations.

Stock Options:

Unknown: Is it possible for a US-based company (without a Canadian entity) to issue them to a Canadian contractor? Any information about this would be extremely appreciated.

Getting help:

Unknown: Should I get a tax advisor? How much should I expect to pay them?
Thanks in advance for any clarification, advice or other information you can provide!
Edit: Great answers here, thank you! But... getting downvoted, did I do something wrong?

2015.02.19 20:10 Billccastengera The rules seem all the same

First--write an amazing book. Second--make sure the cover to that book is professional. Third--make sure the back description attracts interest. Fourth--watch it not sell. If you've followed every piece of advice on self publishing, this is pretty much the formula. Of course there's the Fifth--market it. That last bit is the holy grail. It's the quintessential piece that will propel you into a narrative celebrity, allowing you to quit your day job, and write full time.
We, in the industry, call that Discoverability, and if you've somehow located this holy grail, really, all that preliminary stuff doesn't matter--except the first one. I have experience in a slew of different social marketing approaches, from Twitter to Wordpress, from Pinterest to Reddit, from Tumbler to Facebook. I mean, like, all of them. Obviously Google+....social media has evolved. It was once a great place to market. Now it's saturated and simply doesn't have the power it once did. So all of those blogs about marketing on social media? Forget it. I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying it doesn't work like it used to. And those blogs? Look at the dates on when they were written...2008, 2010... A while ago. Those techniques still hold a place in our tool kit, but like I said, this whole thing evolves very quickly. Social media is quickly becoming the boy who cried wolf, since everyone is using it to sell something. No one believes the posts you put up, no one thinks that the blurb from your book is any different than the blurb from the previous 100 books that just got tweeted. Twitter is chock full of bots now too.
My suggestion is to get back to tradition. Keep tweeting or face booking, or whatever social media outlet with which you communicate. Don't forget that you're a writer. You write stuff. Freelance for magazines or ezines. Offer an article to your local paper. Get your writing out there. Contact indie authors that you've read and liked and ask them if you might be able to compose a foreward to their book for them. Write, and offer that writing to others to get exposure. We get lost in the mechanics of selling and marketing and we forget a fundamental truth. We write. Let's keep doing that.

What was the other self-publisher AMA guy not mentioning/over-exaggerating? A lot. It's why I started this ama.
Most of her advice is really wrong.
Example: it costs a few pennies to self publish properly (not just sticking it up in Create Space). I have spent $500 on editing $1000 on cover art(for three books which is a steal, really) not to mention other fees for layout printing, ISBN and just time in general.
Yes you can go on create space and publish a book on 30 seconds. But think of it like this. Just because you can drive a car doesn't mean you should take your little Toyota and race against indy cars and actually expect to win.
Here is a great article I recently found about the real costs of self-publishing: Link to www.pbs.org. Yes! Exactly!stealing this article!
Close your parentheses and it's without, not with-out. Your $500 editor must really be earning her money. She is... I am horrible at spelling and grammar. She edits everything I do. It's. $500 for just one project she makes a lot more than that trust me.
Actually, $500 seems pretty cheap for editing for a full length novel. What company/who did you use for your editing? She is a one man show. Gilly's red pen. Charges $1.50/page to new clients.
Does she generally edit eroticas or other genres as well? I think I have a writer friend who might be interested in her services. She edits anything. I'll link you to get Facebook page when I get off my phone. :-D
Step 0: Drink heavily. Ha! I'm a member of the local Hemingway club. We go out and get drunk and write. It's for sure step 0 on those nights :)!
I'd like to start by saying something that I think Angela forgot to mention. Just because something works for one writeperson, doesn't mean it's going to work for another writeperson. I say this because I disagree with this ten-step program, while other writers might love it, and others might disagree with it even more than I do. More than anything: when it comes to writing advice that is given with the intent to blanket over all other advice is dangerous. Look for guidelines and suggestions; there are very few strict rules. If you are a diligent planner, however, then it's okay to edit fewer times. If you are writing commercially, with the intent to make money and tell a good story but not interested in the more artistic side of writing, then it's okay to edit fewer times. If you write your first draft slowly, and constantly read back every few thousand words before you begin writing again, then it's okay to edit fewer times. I also feel that the ten-steps does not put enough emphasis on someone else reading your work. This is vital. This might be one of the strict rules of writing. When you read back your own work, even after letting it sit in a drawer for a month, you'll still remember a lot of it and intuitively know what you were trying to say in each scene. You might not notice what's difficult to understand, or what's confusing, or where you had too many words in a sentence. You know what you were trying to say already, so you will likely see that. Someone else will see through all of that. Now, contacting an agent and writing a query letter is its own beast completely separate from writing your novel. This part sucks. There's no way around it. It really, really, REALLY sucks. This, in my humble opinion, is the most soul-draining, life-crushing, shitty part of being a writer. It doesn't suck because of all of the rejections--they help though, more on that below--but because of the sheer amount of work that has to go into this. Agents have their contact details listed on websites such as those I linked above. Those contact details have their own websites listed, so that you can verify the information. Now, seeing as agents are really busy people and get sent thousands of queries a year, they don't always keep this information updated. So be prepared to find conflicting information between AgentQuery and the agency's website. Do they accept fantasy? Only urban fantasy? While AgentQuery says they accept all genre fiction, but the agency's website says they don't take any. There's also a different email address listed on both. Which one do I send it to? This person has spelled their last name differently in two different places! 1) You should also take the time to find some way to personalize the email to show the agent you at least visited their website. You also need to spend a while on said website making sure they represent your genre and that they didn't recently publish a book that's exactly like yours. 2) You need to edit your query letter just as much as your novel, because the SLIGHTEST mistake will cause most agents to discard your email. It will show you can't even proofread a few hundred words in an email, so how is your novel going to be any better? Again, you should read this out loud. I should clarify (I will add an edit on the comment) that this is a basic guide. I work with a lot of newbie writers and a common mistake (Heck even I did it) is to write "the end" and then hit send to agents/publishers/or to even self publish. Editing is important, changing is important. Some people can do it in 3 edits and a re-write. Others need 6 edits, a re-write and a crit group to get it done. The only message that I want to project is that you have to "kill the baby" because your manuscript is not perfect, it's far from it.
Do i need to copy-write or protect a book before sending to publishers? No, but it depends on the laws of your country. (Books only, screenplays are their own can of worms)
The USA recommends only copyrighting your works before publication if you're afraid someone is going to steal your idea.
Check out Link to www.copyright.gov for more info.
If you copyright before publication, you will have to do an update afterwards since I guarantee your book will change and it will change a lot.
Also a cheap and dirty way of assuring your copyright is to put it in an envelope seal it and send it back to yourself via registered mail.
EDIT: May not work in all countries see my comments below. I live in Canada it's legal way of establishing precedence here.
Mailing yourself the work has been debunked. Depends on where you live. It's valid for the Canada and Britain, not for the US. See my other comment.
For screenplays, one way to protect yourself is by registering your screenplay with the WGA. They have a screenplay registration service, where you can register your work for a fee. You do not have to be a member of the Writers' Guild to use the service. Screenplays are a whole other ball game. Thanks for the advice!
"Copy-write"? "With-out"? Are you seriously a published author? I'm typing on my phone words get rearranged on me.
I don't know why people keep mentioning your grammaspelling. She has an editor people, by the time the book gets published someone has gone through and corrected all that crap. Pretty! This. Reddit likes to be complain about everything, I have tough skin. I will answer more questions /better answers once in off my phone and at my computer.
Is it difficult for a minor (under 18) to publish a book? Yes and no. If you want to publish erotica. Then no one will touch you with a 10 foot pole. If you want to publish stuff aimed towards young adults then you have a decent chance. Just keep writing :)!
What are the best tips you can give me regarding self-publishing? Any specific dos/donts? How to Self publish a novel:
Step 1: Write your novel/Short Story.
Step 2: Edit.
Step 3: Put it away for 2 weeks.
Step 4: Edit.
Step 5: Edit again.
Step 6: Put it away again (for longer this time)
Step 7: Edit.
Step 8: Give it to someone else to Edit.
Step 9: Edit again.
Step 10: Repeat steps 2 through 9.
Once you've polished, primed and changed everything about your story you're ready to hire an editor. Some people get away with using crit groups for editing. Most do not. If you have bad editing (I was the victim of bad editing for my first traditionally published novel) then people will NOT but your book after reading the first chapter "preview" on amazon.
Find a cover artist.
Choose where you want to self publish, look at printing options offered by Amazon and smashwords (most serious self-publishing authors use smashwords). Follow their processes as best you can.
Typeset and make sure that everything is perfect before you hit "Send"
Expect to make mistakes your first time out.
If I have an awesome idea for a book/screenplay, but not the discipline to write it. Are there authors willing to take it on? The answer is No. Most authors (any authors) have a million and one ideas for books/screenplays/short stories.
Unless you're ghost writing a memoir or something of the like NO ONE writes anyone else's ideas!
Go ahead and write it on your own :)!
How does one actually go about getting a manuscript into the hands of publishers? It appears to me that most publishers don't accept manuscripts; they require an agent to submit it through the 'usual channels'. How does one normally get in touch with an agent? So this was actually answered really well by another author (I haven't done the agent route yet. I'm assuming I will get there eventually but not ready yet) here: Link to www.reddit.com .
Basically if you want to go big 6, you need an agent. Small press accept direct from the author, and are great when you are just trying to learn the biz.
Also on a rare occasion the big-name pubs open up to general submissions. It's VERY rare but does happen and I know 3 or 4 authors who have gone big 6 this way.
After being published the traditional route, what made you decide to self-publish? What are the pros and cons in your experience? The very short answer is I screwed up.
I wrote the first book of this series directly after finishing my First book "Sometimes It's Fate" so way back in 2009. I immediately subbed it off and got rejected. From everyone. Literally every publisher that does F/M/M kicked it out the door. Not because it's not a good novel, but because I had a controversial topic (that I have since edited out) and it needed a metric-shit-ton of editing.
Once something is rejected you can't go back and say "Hey! I changed it, look at me, look at me! Read it again" So after a lot of thought I decided to do a rapid publish of all three books the series at once. Which means self-publishing.
Pros for traditional: You get to learn the game and get help doing so. Cons: It's not on your schedule.
Pros for self-pub: You can publish what you want. When you want, no matter what you want. Cons: Huge stigma (that is changing!) against self published works.
What was your first book about? I will only do one self-promo thread and I guess this one is it :)!
I have two full length novels published at the moment. They are part of an on-going series arc that will be 5 books (I think?).
Sometimes It's Fate (Canada's Finest Series. Book 1.) Link to www.amazon.com
Sometimes It's Fate Is about finding meaning in insurmountable loss. (M/M romance FYI). I wrote it after the boys in red accident Link to en.wikipedia.org
I lost someone I considered family that day and Sometimes It's Fate is how I dealt with the loss.
It's my first book, I made A lot of mistakes. It's not perfect but it's mine and I love Jason and David.
Boots on the Ground (Canada's Fines Series, Book 2) Link to www.amazon.com
(M/M romance, with a hint of M/F)Jason goes to Afghanistan. It's about military families surviving the loss of a love one, about holding on when all hope is lost, and realizing that we are all human. I break Jason in this novel. One terrible sentence at a time. I kinda hate myself for it. I promise he will get put back together, eventually.
This is my BEST novel to date. I recommend reading this one above all of the others.
Positive Attraction (Canada's Finest series, Book 2.5) Releasing this fall from Phaze Books
Craig's story. About finding someone who loves you, even for your flaws and your terrible mistakes.
Special Investigations(Canada's Finest Series, Book 3) Releasing from Phaze books in the fall of 2013 Jason has to come to terms with that happened to him in Afghanistan and go on with life, or choose to end it.
From my "Hat Trick series" (Short stories about Hockey)
Goalie Interference (Hat Trick series book 1) Link to www.amazon.com
(M/F sexy times)
Hockey goalie Tarah 'TJ' Elliot is too busy stopping pucks to go looking for love. When her friend Natalie sets her up through Madame Eve's 1 Night Stand service, she grudgingly agrees to go. Her ultimate fantasy comes true when Scott Alarid, one of the top scorers in the league, shows up at her hotel room. Hockey player TJ can't possibly spend a night with him, but Tarah certainly can.
Scott's tired of dealing with women who only like him for his all-star status. After his teammates arrange a date for him using the 1NS website, he's delighted to find a woman who doesn't know a thing about the sport. But, will the truth force them to put their relationship on ice?
Power Play written by Emily Cale (Hat Trick Series book 2) Link to www.amazon.com (M/F/M Sexy times!)
Natalie Fritz didn't need a night of sexual adventure as payment for setting her friend up, but she wouldn't turn it down either. Determined to make sure she gets exactly what she wants, she contacts Madame Eve and requests not one, but two dates for the evening. What she doesn't expect is for those men to be players on her friend's hockey team.
Ian and Todd find that sharing women provides all parties with more pleasure. Finding someone who buys into their theory is a little harder. So they turn to Madame Eve's 1 Night Stand service to locate a partner. When they meet Natalie, they discover a gorgeous woman who turns them on physically and intellectually.
Most relationships are meant to be between two people, but what happens when it takes three to make the night worthwhile? Can they take a leap of faith or will their time be limited to one night?
Unsportsmanlike Conduct (Hat trick Series, Book 3) Releasing from Decadent Publishing in summer 2013
M/M Closeted hockey player meets cop. Sexy times ensure :)!
I have multiple other novels that are in the works. An author's work is never done.
So after Copyrighting my short story/novel, is there something else I need to do before submitting it to Amazon to be kindle-published? Hire and editor and EDIT it. Then edit it again and again. Hire a cover artist (or do it yourself?). Make sure you get type-set for printing. Looking into your printing options (if you want to go that route). If you do not live in the USA make sure you get an ITIN #.
If I were to write down an idea, or a script, or a novel, and mail it to myself, does that count as a copyright? Please see this comment thread: Link to www.reddit.com
Funny this AMA popped up, I'm doing a fun little experiment where I'm writing a book by publishing a chapter every week and putting it up online for free. I thought it would be a good way to keep me motivated, and hey there's a small chance someone important might see it, right? I think it's a great way to gain interest from people out there! Waiting for the next week. Just remember since it's available for free expecting to charge for publications later is a bit of a no-no in the publishing world.
How much do you make on average, yearly/monthly from this profession? Do you need to supplement your income with other jobs, at least when you were first starting out? How hard was it to achieve the success you have now? So writing is a subjective business.
I'm pulling in a rent payment every few months, so I work as an RN to supplement my income. I have a few friends that are making 30-45k a year at it (they are often writing full time), I have a select few that make 60k a year.
Right now working as an RN makes me 65+k a year. With writing only make a fraction of that. I don't have as much time to write so I don't make as much. It's a bit of a circle. One day I would like to quit and just write, but I have the problem of really loving my nursing job, as much as I love writing. So I don't want to quit!
Who do you hire to design your book covers? You should stop hiring them. Publisher choice, I like the cover for goalie and boots. Sometimes is bad.
Yet you'll fork over $1000 for three of them because, according to you, the use of photoshop and basic art skills is far too hard of a skill for someone to have. Please, just admit you're full of shit. We'd have more respect for you. I can't draw worth shit. Most writer's can't. I hire a cover artist to do it for me.
Here is one website's breakdown the costs of a cover Link to www.romancenovelcovers.com $300 for the image $150 for the cover artist.
Here is another example Link to thekilliongroupinc.com of how much cover art costs.
My current books were designed by in-house cover artists. I paid nothing for them. Sometimes It's Fate cover needs a re-do(as does the whole novel. Once my 5 year contract is up, I plan on re-doing the entire book and then republishing it as a self-published novel). The other two are perfectly fine, I quiet like Goalie Interference. Since it'a series we are keeping the same feel for all three covers.
People people, why are we taking advice from a woman who can barely write? I have two full length novels, a short story (and 3 more contracted), plus multiple others on the go. Two completed series, and two more 80% done. How many novels have you written again?
You say that you don't think that people should self publish without proper direction. Can you elaborate? So anyone can log onto create space or smash words, and upload a novel and boom, they're a published author. However, a good self-published author has a few things others don't.
1-A good editor 2-A copy editor 3-A cover artist (or the ability to draw a cover themselves) 4-A decent typesetter.
Then you need a market plan, money for the marketing plan, and a million and one other costs. There are entire books written about this subject. (Link to www.pbs.org great link) If you want to be taken seriously then do your research!
Hi Angela! Thanks for doing this AMA. How would I go about finding a publishing company to help my grandfather write a book? He is one of the foremost experts in pecan grafting (basically genetics) in the country and he has some amazing stories. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! So he would be writing a more technical book? If that's the case I have limited knowledge, typically he would need an agent. He needs to write the book/text book then find an agent to help him sell it. It's very different from my field of knowledge sorry! Start with a good Google search!
Dyshraphia Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name. Please search for Dyshraphia in Wikipedia to check for alternative titles or spellings. You mean dysgraphia OP. Was that a joke? Somehow I don't think so unfortunately. Phone auto corrected the link. Fixed it.
That's an interesting phone you have there. I think you're really testing the old adage: there's no such thing as bad publicity. Good luck with your career. It's a google nexus. I just got it last week and I still have no idea how to use it. I gave up my blackberry with a physical keyboard so i', having major issues switching.
And thank you! Right now it's more of a hobby since I need pay the bills by being a nurse. One day I would love to be a big name author :)!
So you're not even making money off of this, and you want us to listen to you. Seems legit. I never said that. Read my other comments.
I said "I make a rent payment or so every 3 months" since you're paid quarterly. My profits have been increase every quarter since my first book came out. Most authors work other jobs to support their writing habit. One day I will be solely a writer, but I'm not there yet.
Hi Angela and all you other writers out there :). There are tons of spaces out there. Twitter is amazing to meet other authors or people who love the type of books you love. Facebook is great as well.
I LOVE writing. There's nothing that piques my curiosity and gets my blood flowing more than a dynamic conversation about books and films. Also Goodreads is amazing for connecting with others.
Congrats on your success! Check out those that do blog hops, and tours. Get his name out there on the internet. Make everything available in ebook that will help.
I am currently working with an author and we have just recently published 40 books in 40 days and have churned out a few others since. we've spent a few thousand on illustrators but have done all the rest ourselves. link if you're curious Amazon Link. Contact larger papers for reviews.
Promotion is where we're hitting walls - the author is getting known in the city but it's slow going. he's been approaching news sites, submitting all over the place for interviews and such - what else in your opinion would go a long way to get more noticed? thanks! Make contacts with other authors who can promote you :)!
Ever written science fiction? I have! I'm working with an author right now to develop scifi/romance crossover.
KNow any way into that section of the market? The best way into the market is short stories that are featured in magazines or ezines etc.
DO you think paper-books will die one day? I think paper books will be around for the foreseeable future. I think we might end up with a star trek society one day :)!
DO you find there is more prestige in having published a paper copy? I think people take you a bit more seriously when you hand them a paper copy vs, a digital copy.
What is a good way, besides an expensive conference, to network with agents -How helpfull have you found social media (mostly blogs/twitter) in finding/connecting with your audience? -Would you reccomend hiring an editobook doctor? Though after 4 drafts I think if I don't nut up and start submitting I never will. -How often do agents read through an entire submission package? -What are the best ways to target/approach a promising agent? So following agents on twitter is a great way to get to know them, and what they like (and dislike!). Don't try and pitch to them there. Just follow them. Agents are very vocal about what they like and don't like! So if you're not confidant in your novel being edited to perfection, then yes. Hire someone who can do editing, 4 rounds of edits is a lot at first, but if you want extra confidence, finding a good editor will help. Agents will often reject based on the opening email. If you do not follow their instructions to the letter. See-ya. If it's good, if it's really good, they will read the whole thing and ask for more.
What advice would you give to a college student attempting to write a novel? Write. Write. And write.
Edit: I wrote my first novel "Sometimes It's Fate" while finishing my nursing degree. I just sat down and started writing. I wrote as a release from studying. Your best bet is to just write and see what happens.
Is creating your own cover art a good idea or a bad idea? I really want to self publish my series this summer and I'm a talented artist, but I don't know if having my own cover would help or hurt my chances I becoming successful. It depends. If you're a good artist then go for it. If you can get the right picture for your concert then that's what matters. I can't draw or design worth a hill of beans. If you can all the power to you!
Do you think there is room in the world for a change to self-publishing? Meaning, finding different ways of self-publishing, perhaps more unique ways of doing it? Or, do you believe that people are too centered around a book and that changing that concept would not work? I think self publishing is changing every day. I'm working on my self-publishing project with someone who used to be a publisher. For her the idea 15 years ago of selling only digital books that people read on a device they have to buy is insane.
Edit Forgive my being somewhat vague. I have a self-publishing project planned that is...quite different from the standard book format, but do not want to go into it, not for fear of someone else using it, but rather not to sound like I am using this question to advertise. If you've got something that might work, go for it. It might flop, or it might be the next big thing.
The project I am doing is purely...non-commercial. I am not trying to make money on it, in fact it's costing me money (Artists, editors, voice talent etc etc). However, this idea (And the storyline and all that) have been kicking around my head for about...10 years now so I figure I have to do it. Might as well. Get those damn plot bunnies out so that new ones can take their place :)!
This is hardly a plot, more like a whole crap ton of plots based around a world. There are a ton of plot bunnies going on, frigging breeding. That's exactly how I feel :)!
Turns out the editing for only my first book would be $2300 through them, and I know I need one. Not free at all... While his was simple and only had a few words, mine was 110k words. I need a developmental editor! But for a question... would you say it's easier to be taken seriously if you have a small story first and then get into the biggelonger (aka more words) stories? I was going research a bit ago and people said you generally want to have a smaller book (10k-50k words) before people would help you tackle/bring about a larger book (greater than 100k). Have you ran into any of this? Find a different editor. They are probably charging 2cents/word (standard rate) but to lower it your best bet is to join crit groups, get you book edited for free(and do some editing of others), then move on and go back to a for-hire editor and you might be able to find one for a lot less. As for size, it depends. For a romance novel 110k is a lot(50-->70k is normal), for science fiction 110k is long, but not impossible. Expect with proper editing to cut 10-->15k. Especially if this is your first book. So my answer is know your genre. Work the book, work the edits and the re-writes until you have something that you can show to others. Don't just rely on create space editors.
Okay, so what do you think of this? I think the Amazon "Worlds" thing is going to cause a lot of problems. It's a horrible idea.
(Disclaimer I started off writing fan fiction at 13).
1-Amazon/Alloy will own the copyright to ALL of the works posted in the "Amazon Worlds" section. This is going to cause issues down the line. What happens if an author who wrote fan fiction 5 years ago takes that story and turns it into an original fiction (see twilight and 50 shades). Will they then SUE the original author?
2-Since they own the rights Amazon/Alloy can literally steal anything they way. IF they love a story arc or a character, boom it's their's and they won't have to pay the author a penny for it.
3-How will getting paid change the fan fiction community? So many fan fiction writers, write it because they love the series, they love writing. Is it going to expand? Is it going to keep growing? What happens when people start writing controversial topics like (using harry potter examples) Harry raping Ron or Snape falling in love with Hermonie and them running off in the sunset. What happens to the 99/100 shit stories that are written by a 13year old that should never see the light of day (yes I am talking about my writing here people).
4-What about cross overs or sex (no sex allowed apparently, dammit that what I read FF for!?!). Or a million other things that Amazon is going to deem inappropriate?
It just seems like it's not going to be a good thing. Not at all. O.o.
Question: How did you become a writer when you're clearly terrible at spelling and grammar? Based on your responses in this thread, you clearly care very little about the quality of your prose. I will not be a customer. I have a severe learning disability. I hire an editor for a reason.
That being said, part of my SLD is that I don't see the mistakes. Just gonna tell you right now, blaming your simple mistakes on a "severe learning disability" and on your phone are not going to curry you any favor at all. Well what do you want me to say. I admit I'm a horrible speller and horrific at grammar. Do you want me to just magically get better? Or hire an editor to fix all of my ama answers? My phone wasn't helping matters, and if you don't like the truth then it's not my problem.
What do you think about the information in this graphic? Link to docs.google.com. I think it's pretty accurate. I really hate things like Authorhouse they're really a vanity publisher. Other than that I think it's pretty decent.
A friend and former coworker is a 5x published author and he stated that essentially, it's a networking game like all the rest of the world. Unknowns need a phat pedigree from a fancy school to even get an agent to crack open the draft. Random success stories are the exception rather than the rule. He's totally right it's all about who you know!
Yes, this is just an AMA on reddit, but you should really take your writing -even on the internet- more seriously. Also, I realize your goal in this was not advertisement but it was a perfect opportunity even if it wasn't your focus.
What is the best way to get a book noticed/published; Showing it to a publisher when it's halfway, after it's done, or when it is almost finished but just needs some polishing? I'm asking this because I'm currently writing a fantasy novel, inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire. Thanks in advance! So the general rule of thumb is that you ONLY submit when book is polished, primped and ready to go.
If you submit a query and then it gets accepted then you need to have your manuscript ready to send ASAP. Agents or publishers won't wait 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years for a book you're "going" to finish. They will move onto the next person with-out blinking an eye.
Thanks, I had a friend getting paid to write on his book but every time he got a bit far into the story, he stopped and started a new one... scratched my head at that. Thanks for this! That sounds like an odd way to write. Then again us writers are odd ducks :)!

2013.03.04 22:54 MyBeautyMuse When To Toss Your Old Makeup

If like me, you are bona fide makeup junkie buying new items and products to try, to use, and to fall in love with on a more than regular basis then perhaps stashed in your overstuffed makeup bag lurks plenty of items that need to make an exit. To get the process started the easiest stuff to part with is the items you don’t like or no longer need.
Here are some guidelines as to the right time to toss your beauty loot.
First off since most products don’t come with an expiration date here are a few tell tale signs of a product gone wrong:
Smell – Most products have fragrances added whether natural or synthetic, if the product smells, sour, waxy or like chemicals it has gone past its due date .
Appearance – If your makeup has changed color, faded, or separated the oils may have gone rancid, bacteria may be growing in it or it may have faded due to light exposure.
Consistency – If cream or liquid products have become dry, cracked or have gotten thinner or thicker than they used to be it’s a good bet that the ingredients have gone bad…toss it asap!
As a general rule, liquid products should be discarded after 12 months; this includes foundation, liquid concealers, shimmers, tinted moisturizers, primers etc.
Cream products such as blush, cream concealer and cream shadows should be discarded after 12 months.
Powders – Loose and pressed setting powders, blushes, bronzers should be tossed after 12 months.
Powder eye shadows when stored properly and sealed can be used for 18 months before throwing away.
Other products used around the eye area are especially important to replace often. Eyeliner pencils should be replaced at least once per year and should be sharpened often and covered when not in use.
Liquid and gel eyeliner should be replaced every six months, as they tend to dry out faster and hold bacteria.
Mascara should be replaced every three months to avoid bacterial issues around the eyes.
And most important… don’t forget to wash your makeup brushes and tools regularly!
WANT TO USE THIS ARTICLE IN YOUR EZINE OR WEB SITE? You can, as long as you include this complete blurb with it: “Beauty and Style Expert and Makeup Artist Mentor Diane Aiello teaches clients easy and practical ways to look and feel gorgeous from head to toe and helps makeup artists take their beauty businesses to the next level. About the workshop:

Investigating Technique: In this workshop students will learn to develop their own juggling style and tricks, based on a deeper awareness of juggling concepts and techniques. It is suitable for intermediate (basic ability with 3 balls and 3 clubs) to advanced jugglers of all ages.
Over three days, performer, teacher and director Luke Wilson will guide the way along the winding and often overlapping paths of Technique, Tricks and Creation within juggling. These three themes form the basis of his juggling life, and correspond closely to the bigger questions of How?, What?, and Why?
HOW do we juggle? Not just body position and movement, but also exploring the mental side of juggling technique. WHAT do we juggle? Clubs, balls or rings? Diabolos or cigar boxes? And what tricks do we choose to do, and how can we create new ones? WHY do we juggle? By exploring juggling composition and the creative process, perhaps we can discover how to show our tricks and sequences in their best light.
Luke has taught workshops covering tricks and concepts at juggling festivals worldwide, and has taught juggling at professional Circus Schools in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Holland and Sweden. He is the co-creator of the worlds first Masters Degree Module in Circus Research (at the University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm, Sweden) and a special prize winner at the World Circus Festival "Cirque de Demain" in Paris, France.
He likes his tea with milk and his toast done on both sides.
